This portfolio page explores my ongoing series of photographic ceramic decal vessels, combining porcelain, glaze, photography, and fire into surfaces that reflect memory, nature, and quiet observation. Included here are the story behind the series, details about my process of integrating photographic ceramic decals onto handmade forms, and an evolving archive documenting the majority of works created within this body of work. Together, these vessels investigate stillness, transformation, and the way fleeting moments from the natural world can become permanently embedded within the ceramic surface.
The Process
Each vessel begins as a hand-thrown or altered porcelain form. Porcelain is central to this body of work because of its luminosity, softness, and ability to hold subtle surface transitions. After forming and trimming, layers of slips, glazes, and atmospheric markings are applied to create depth and movement across the surface.
Introduction
The photographic imagery is transformed into ceramic decals through a specialized printing and firing process. These decals are then carefully integrated onto the glazed vessel and fired again in the kiln, permanently bonding the image into the ceramic surface. The result allows photography and clay to coexist as a single material language.
I am particularly interested in how photographic imagery changes when transferred onto curved handmade forms. The images soften, distort, and interact with glaze movement, drips, texture, and the unpredictability of firing. Rather than functioning as literal documentation, the photographs become fragments of memory embedded within the vessel.
Many of the surfaces are intentionally layered—combining matte and glossy passages, flowing glaze transitions, exposed clay, and atmospheric marks left by the firing process. These interactions create visual depth that changes as light moves across the form.
